This design impressed the judges with its "over-center" latch mechanism, which eliminated sliding friction by utilizing rollers. The system allowed for quick actuation when the latch was engaged, moving significant distances efficiently. Additionally, the design package was exceptionally detailed, further demonstrating the thoughtfulness and precision of this submission. (note only the latch design was judged for placement, extra material submitted did not impact the judging).
Among numerous strong Bowden mechanism concepts, this design stood out for its robustness and detailed analysis. The judges were particularly impressed by the thoroughness of the submission, which presented a clear, complete understanding of the mechanism's functionality and operation.
One of the earliest submissions to feature a central rotating element, this design earned high marks for its robustness. While the judges noted that its actual implementation might lean towards a heavier mass, the engineering quality and reliability of the concept were undeniable, and it was clear that this system could be easily fabricated.
This concept offered a unique twist on the central rotating element approach by maintaining everything in tension until release. The judges praised the innovative method of holding the cable back until triggered, highlighting that tension-based systems tend to outperform compression-based ones by mitigating buckling risks. Further, this tension mechanism results in a "hair trigger" quickly releasing the system once the latches are engaged.
Demonstrated through a working prototype, this concept showcased exceptional operational clarity. Most importantly, the submission demonstrated a working mechanical "and" gate. The judges also admired this twist on the rotating ring mechanism that triggered the latches, with each latch individually powered by its own spring.
